Ya’ll do recall all my racket about no roses for Valentine’s Day? Well, that has been taken care of, not on That Day. But, the date doesn’t matter so much. Roses look as good on February 27th as they do on February 14th, me thinks.
I was sitting at the computer on that February 27th, when a lady walked in that I called a good morning to, and went back to my typing – excuse me –keyboarding (let me be technologically correct).
That lady walked around the corner to where I sat and when I looked around, there she stood, holding a big bouquet of red roses! I wasn’t even looking for roses anymore and there they were.
I did a double-take and many names ran through my mind, as to the sender.
When I opened the card attached, here’s what I read: "What a sad article. Shame on Suzie! Here’s your Valentine roses." And they were from Carol Hightower at "Carol’s Florist & Gifts". What a nice thing to do! I called her immediately and thanked her profusely.
Now, in defense of Suzie, let me assure you that when she came down for the snowy Gaither-week-end on February 14th, she brought me a heart-shaped box of my favorite Russell Stover candy and a helium heart-shaped balloon.
So, Valentine’s Day was not a total disaster, after all. Thanks to two nice ladies who took care of me.
I don’t know where in the world Cupid got off to, overworked that day, I suppose. And – bear in mind that Carol Hightower’s husband, Hubert, is at least a Cupid-assistant. He’s the one who matched up Joanna and Joel on the bulldozer, remember?
He does good work too. Joanna and Joel had a baby girl a few months ago. Joel didn’t know if he would live through the birth or not, but he did. And that baby girl did not break when he finally held the tiny little thing. She just wrapped herself around his heart about twenty-leven times, forever, and now nothing is good enough for her.
I’ve tried to get Hubert working on a Prince Charming, but the only one I’ve seen is running in the other direction as fast as he can. Maybe that arrow didn’t get deep enough. Maybe Cupid-Hubert needs to put more punch into the next arrow he aims, or shoot so that the arrow sticks through Prince's heart and into a building behind him. Yeah, that might work and then he couldn’t run.
Now that Valentine’s Day has been taken care, let us proceed.
Let us proceed with "The First Counsel", written by Brad Meltzer,
"Shadow is the Secret Service code name for First Daughter Nora Hartson. And when Michael Garrick, a young White House lawyer, begins dating the irresistible Nora, he’s instantly spellbound, just like everyone else in her world.
It’s a world all of us have heard about but few of us really know. A world where power is an aphrodisiac, your father is the President, your close friends wear earpieces and carry guns, and everyone watches your every move.
Like most, Michael thinks he can handle the pressure. Until, while together late one night, he and Nora witness something they were never meant to see—and become ensnared in a secret agenda, a scheme by a White House insider that includes betrayal and murder.
Suddenly, this young Washington power broker, who just yesterday was out on a dream date, finds himself trusting no one, not even Nora, in a battle to prove his innocence. It’s a battle that will shake the walls of the Oval Office to their foundations – and may ultimately cost Michael Garrick his life."
