Library Notes

November 13, 2004

By Pansy Hundley, Librarian.

Over the years, we have flown several U.S. flags, here at the library, until they were worn out or flown out. Windell Rice, of Woodmen of the World Insurance Society, would come, bringing us another new one to fly for it’s lifetime. He brought us a holder once, and even mounted it for us. He has really kept our flags flying.

The VFW, at one time, brought us a flag also, which has been flying for a year or so.

Our present flag pole I brought from home and the poor thing is just about worn out. I was thinking recently that I needed to make a mental note to start looking for a new one. But, then, I followed that thought a little further., That further thought was that we needed a large flag pole to stand outside, wave that flag and not have to worry about the it blowing down or the pole collapsing , etc. So, with that brain-storm, my continuing thought was how to get such a thing. Of course, considering all the former flags from Windell, future flags immediately brought him to mind.

So, the next time he came in the library, I collared him and presented my request for a big, tall flag pole. He hardly blinked an eye and said he’d check and see if he could get one. The Woodmen had donated a lot of poles over September 11th, in memory of those victims and maybe there was one left.

Sure enough, in a couple of days, here came Windell. One had been found, ordered and was on its’ way. And, he still did not blink an eye. He is really a miracle man.

I reminded him that the library is closed on Monday. He told them not to deliver it on Monday. So, they delivered it – you guessed it – on Monday. Windell and I kept waiting and waiting and no pole arrived. He finally called the company and was informed that it was delivered – on a Monday – to City Hall. A-Ha! Lost at City Hall! I manned the telephone and found my flag pole. One person thought he’d told me and another thought I knew.

At any rate, the flag pole was found and things began to move. First thing we knew, a front-end loader was down here, operated by that magician, Juan, digging up dirt with that bucket like he was using a shovel. He made a place for forms to be built and concrete was poured.

Within a time period of a few days we had a concrete pad, 11 ft. by 5 ft. square, with a gorgeous flag pole, standing way-y-y high in the air. There is a commemorative plaque set in the side of that concrete pad, "honoring and remembering the victims and heroes of September 11th and celebrating the enduring spirit of all Americans."

We are so grateful to Windell and the Woodmen of the World Insurance Society for this magnificent flag pole that will stand for many years at the front of our library, and fly our American flag.

For other business at hand, let us find out about Diane Mott Davidson’s newest writing effort, which she ‘s entitled "Double Shot". In a description of this latest book, it is stated: "In her twelfth novel – her tastiest tale yet – the ingenious storyteller whips up a rich souffle of murder and mischief." Well, let us just see if this is her tastiest one yet, shall we?

"The governor of Colorado has commuted the prison sentence of Goldy Schulz’a ultra-handsome, ultra-charming, ultra-wealthy, ultra-venal ex-husband, Dr,. John Richard Korman, otherwise known to Goldy as the Jerk.. He’s released, and soon afterward Goldy becomes the victim of threats, rumors, and violence.

Then there’s a murder and suspicion centers on Goldy. Suddenly, she is faced with the challenge of running her successful catering business while fending off two persistent detectives.

Caught in a web of secrets and lies that could tear her family apart, Goldy, must use all of her considerable powers of detection to find the real killer before she herself becomes a target."
